loss for us all.
Hon. Henry A. Mentz, Jr. who was a Senior US District
Judge for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Judge Mentz
has devoted substantial efforts to legal, academic,government,
and community service.
Judge
Mentz has served or been recognized in the following capacities:
Honorary Board of Directors Award from
the American Academy of Financial Management 2002-2004
Judge Mentz was born in New Orleans in 1920 but lived
in Hammond until 1982.
He moved back to New Orleans when he was appointed a US
Federal Judge
He was salutatorian of his high school class.
He was awarded a scholarship and enrolled at Tulane University
at the age of 16 and later Graduated with Honors.
He served as a Member of the Law Review at Louisiana State
University. Attended law coursework at Tulane University
He graduated from LSU Law in 1943 and immediately enlisted
as a private in the Army, fought in "The Battle of
the Bulge" and in central Germany as an Alpha Bravo
weapons specialist and Sergeant, and served his country
until honorable discharge in late 1945. He was awarded
two Battle Stars and the Bronze Star Medal. Served the
JAG Corp. after the war had been won.
His
batallion and company Liberated vital strategic sectors
and several "concentration camps" during WWII
Upon return from WWII he served Louisiana as Special Counsel
to the Democratic controlled LA Senate
He has been active in the S. Louisiana community for the
last 50 years.
He has served as a Board Member of the Salvation Army in

Served two-terms as President of the Louisiana Civil Service
League
Served as President of a Tri Parish Bar Association on the
Northshore
Active in providing Legal Assistance to Minorities. Created
and Chaired indigent pro-bono organizations in Louisiana
Written, edited, and published scholarly research on the
Bible in his book "The Combined Gospels" which
was published in 1975.
Wrote, published, and edited several hundred legal opinions
and articles
Served as a Board Member of Southeastern Louisiana University
Served Loyola University in New Orleans in various capacities
Served on Several Boards and Committees for Tulane University
Judge Mentz has been active in forestation and tree farming
for 30 years
Chairman for the Hammond, Louisiana "City Industrial
Board"
Chairman of the March of Dimes and American Red Cross in
New Orleans and Hammond.
Served on the Executive Committee of the Council for a Better
Louisiana
Served two terms on the Board of Directors of WYES TV ,
an LA public station
President of the Louisiana Council for Music and the Performing
Arts, 1995-96
Recipient, Distinguished Services Award, AMVETS, 1950
Louisiana Civil Service League, Honorary Life Chairman
Distinguished Service Award, Delta Tau Delta Fraternity
Played Clarinet in the Tulane University Band 1937-41 and
is Still a Jazz-o-phile
Served as a Visiting Federal Judge in Boston, New York,
San Francisco, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, and Chicago.
Keynote Speaker for multiple conferences, conventions, and
convocations.
Member of the Scottish Rite Masons and Masonic Associations
for over 40 years
Father of 5 children and married to the former Ann Lamantia
for 47 years.
